Where My Wonderings Can Lead…
- I am concluding everything we have done is the result of either Intended Consequences, or Unintended Consequences; with Unintended Consequences ruling the Day. For example, some man – a long time ago – invented the wheel …and then, in time, came cars…that was a natural and intended evolution (Carriages to Horseless Carriages)….but then came pollution from cars. Unintended.
- …Another example: And later someone invented little wheels to put on suitcases and it became easier for people to take their suitcases along with them when they had to go somewhere. Intended. But soon after, so many people had little wheels on their suitcases, too many of them carried their suitcases to airplanes and went to Venice and everywhere else that was nice to go to and they ruined all theses places for everybody else, because there were too many people traveling around with their suitcases with little wheels on them. Not to mention all the pollution creating cars they brought with them.( …I can make the same case for renting out your extra room and then nobody being able to find an apartment anymore – but either you see it as a problem or you don’t – depending on whether you rent out your 2nd or 3rd home.)
- Whole towns, and some islands, have been made wealthy by tourists bringing their little wheeled suitcases with them…and at the same time nobody wants to live in those towns and islands anymore, because there is nothing to do but sell tourist food and trinkets to all the little wheeled invaders.
- So, when I am President, the first thing I will do is banish the little wheels. This would result in the near term weakening of the travel industry and many hospitality sectors; but eventually many cities would attract more permanent residents and true life and local culture could return. Of course, the second thing I’d have to do is get rid of the BnBs so all the people who want to return would have a place to live in. Maybe I’ll have to get rid of the cars, too.
- It is complicated trying to figure out how to solve things. …but if you don’t take charge, someone else will.
Some quotes:
“Are you there?” …Thomas Edison to Watson…on his 2nd call to Mr. Watson
“Mr. Watson, Come here. I want to see you,” -Thomas Edison, the first message , ever, on a phone. …He had just spilled some battery acid and needed Mr. Watson’s help….the beginning of a series of Unintended Consequences.
That’s it for this week. …and a fond “Hello” to Ladyskybird, wherever you are.
