So. Yesterday I was idling away my time reading some Shakespeare…hoping to get away from the news of the day and reduce the throbbing pains from my case of Derangement Syndrome. Here it was before my very eyes: Act One, Scene 3 of Hamlet; Polonius is giving advice to his son Laertes, who is leaving home for Paris: “Neither a borrower nor a lender be, For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry. This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.” It suddenly occurred to me if our President or the Richest Man in the World were to give advice to their 20 some odd children – they would not give this.
- First Off, they are both Borrowers Extraordinaire…and being false to every man is of no concern to either (Google the number of Night and Day Falsehoods during the 45th Presidency, or factcheck the Savings from the DOGE firings). As for losing the Borrowings, who cares? (Factcheck Bankruptcies, etc..) As for “Losing” friends there are always more to be had. Nobody knows what ‘Husbandry” is anymore, so that’s no problemo.
- Second Off, some of the highest paid men in America are Bankers (aka Lenders of first and last resorts.) So, if your son is off on a life lesson trip you would be well advised to tell him to Borrow and, or, become a Banker, or both – and put down the Shakespeare.
