Here is a photo of a Cappuccino made for us by Fabio at our little caffe yesterday morning. ($1.50, don’t tell anyone) Why do I show you this? Because it is necessary to take time out from all the troubles, big & bigger, in this not best of all possible worlds – and enjoy the little moments…and when you do do that you will realize the ‘little’ moments are not so little after all.
EARWORMS AND MINDWORMS
- Here’s a story I can’t get out of my mind, for some reason: Khrushchev comes to power (1956) and he is giving a speech at the Presidium. He talks about how terrible and inhumanely cruel things were under Stalin, when somebody in the back yelled, “Why didn’t you speak up?” Khrushchev, slammed the podium with both fists, scowled, looked out at the room and roared, “Who said that?” The room fell silent for twenty seconds. Then Khrushchev said, “Now you know why nobody spoke up!”
- “I see the bad moon arising/ See trouble on the way/ See earthquakes and lightning’/I see bad times today
Don’t go around tonight/
Well, it’s bound to take your life
Hope you have got your things together/Hope you are quite prepared to die
Looks like we’re in for nasty weather, one eye is taken for an eye
There’s a bad moon on the rise/” -Fogerty, ( 1969 song, “Bad Moon Rising”…go to u-tube, go to ‘Bad Moon Arising’…skip ad – and play. - Al Smith, the Governor of New York, was running for President of the U.S. and was about to speak at Tammany Hall when somebody in the back of the room yelled out” Go ahead Al, tell ’em everything you know. It won’t take long.” Al shot back, “I’ll do better than that, I’ll tell ’em everything we both know. It won’t take any longer.” Those were the days. (1928)
- A few nights ago, ‘They’ held an annual “Al Smith Catholic Charity Dinner” in New York. A man (who I will try to never mention his name again in my posts) got up and spoke. This man spoke for quite a while and in doing so, he managed to subtract from the total knowledge in the room. He was so base, he did give a new definition to the word ‘charity’, however…
- New Phrase: “Political Technology”…Definition of: “Lying” …Does that fit under the ‘Thou shalt not bear False Witness’ edict, or is Political Technology o.k. because it might be used for the ‘Greater Good’?
Some quotes:
- “You can fool some of the people some of the time — and that’s enough to make a decent living.” -W.C. Fields …or even better – “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bull.” (circa 1920)…This guy was supposed to be funny, not a political advisor.
- “Who ya gonna believe? Me? or your own eyes?” -Chico Marx, 1936 movie “Duck Soup”)…This reminds me of the MAGA approach to the ‘January 6’ event. (ibid on the ‘funny vs.political advisor’ comment above.)

That’s it for the week. Be careful out there. …And “Hello” to Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.
